Experts are reflecting on this wage gap on the date known as Black Women’s Equal Pay Day, which comes four months after Equal Pay Day, averaged for all women, reflecting the larger pay gap Black women face. Things like paid family and medical leave, "reasonable accommodations for pregnant workers," and "providing workers with affordable, quality childcare," would also help, she added. For Black women, of whom many are the primary breadwinners of their households, the pay gap of 63 cents on the dollar represents more than just a loss of money, said Shannon Williams, the director of Equal Pay Today, a project of Equal Rights Advocates. Pay transparency measures, like the law recently passed by California, can help as well according to Hoffman. Hoffman highlighted some of the ways to close the pay gap. So for example, six in 10 Black women aged 25 to 54 reported difficulty paying regular household expenses." Hoffman said the survey shows "despite greater access to the labor market and a narrowing of the wage gap this year, many women are struggling to pay regular household expenses, with Black and Latina women feeling the greatest strains. Lauren Hoffman, associate director for women's economic security with the Women's Initiative at The Center for American Progress, also pointed to the Household Pulse Survey from the Census Bureau, which has been surveying people about how their lives have changed during the pandemic. Edwith Theogene, senior director of racial equity and justice at the Center for American Progress, told Insider the pandemic recovery in the US has been faster "than other recoveries that we've experienced in the past, and it also has been a more equitable process due to the leadership of the Biden administration and strong leadership that we have throughout the country." However, Theogene added that inequities still exist in the labor market and thus "a return to pre-pandemic levels should not be the goal because the gender gap and the racial wealth gap persisted and existed then." The pandemic and its recovery brought long-running racial and gender inequalities to the fore. That rate is still not back to the pre-pandemic figure, standing at 62.0% as of August 2022. The labor force participation rate for Black women age 20 and over, which measures the share of that demographic group who are either working or actively looking for work, dropped from 63.9% in February 2020 to 59.3% two months later in April 2020 when employment across industries took a hit from the pandemic. ![]() Mason said the money lost due to the pay gap affects "their ability to build wealth." It also impacts "their ability to save for the future," including for retirement or paying for their children's college, and "ride out an economic storm," like the pandemic, according to Mason. The over $900,000 in loses over a 40-year career for Black women from the pay gap can negatively impact Black women financially. ![]() Nicole Mason, president and chief executive officer of the Institute for Women's Policy Research, told Insider. "The pay gap for Black women is the result of a few issues: racial and gender discrimination, the intersection of those two in the workforce, and also labor segmentation," C. There were no official reports on the subject, and Talbot refused to blame himself for what could only be exaggerated war stories. In feral states, they massacred villages, impaling the populace on bayonets, leaving them hanging from trees. Though most side effects were minor, there were rumors that a small number of soldiers went mad. There, off the coast of India, prisoners from the Opium War became his unwilling subjects, leading to a drug that allowed soldiers to withstand incredible amounts of pain. He was rewarded with a secret laboratory beneath a prison camp on Dyer Island. In time, he completed one of his greatest achievements: a chemical that could increase a worker's productivity while reducing their need for rest. His willingness to push the limits secured him a position with the British East India Company, and within seven years he was made head chemist. He attended the London School of Medicine and excelled despite several reprimands. Into his adult years, his ambition developed as quickly as his questionable methods. There was something magical in how a single flower could so drastically affect him. When he recovered, it wasn't fear that gripped him, but fascination. For days, he laid in bed dripping with sweat, purging any food that touched his stomach. What began as a child's curiosity nearly turned deadly after experimenting with a patch of poisonous foxglove. As a boy, he was a popular child-bright, charismatic, and unafraid to challenge authority-yet despite his social graces he was fiercely independent, spending much of his time exploring the sprawling fields near his town alone. This was the credo of Talbot Grimes, a Scottish chemist whose unrestrained ambition took him to towering heights. To understand the human condition, one must rise above it. I say the main theme is that Hope/Friendship is still relevant esp in nowadays but the manga-ka never hits the readers so heavy-handed that it becomes trite than significant. It's interesting to see how the main characters grow from inexperienced kids to relatively confident teens and happier adults. The series does have a rough start as we're not exactly sure how a child can enlist in the army and become a soldier but everyone does treat Ed and Al like kids which is much better than say small adults. I feel like it aged pretty well other than some of the physical gags/jokes which feel out of place now and the omake added some comedy to otherwise dark scenes. Although FMA's cast is pretty large I managed to keep everyone's face and histories apart which is impressive and I can see how their lives changed for the better or worse due to the events. I liked how even minor characters were noted and had different designs vs just NPCs. Also, no creepy scenes b/t them and the male characters which is awesome. I feel that most of the main story beats still hold up and avoids some of the traps of long shonen like a meandering quest objective, no real ending, or too many similar cast members that go nowhere.Īlso, how the manga-ka handled all the female characters who all had agency in her life and actions was great compared to some modern stories. Anyhow, just wanted to point out that the manga, at least to me (and i don´t fit any of the two categories you point out) is not that great. It's been almost two decades since I first completed FMA series back when I started in JR High and it was an amazing exp to grow up with the Elric brothers from their mistakes and how they managed to resolve to get their bodies back. Also, alchemy is not really explained in detail, it is said that in order to recieve something yo must give something of equal value but alchemist bend matter without giving anything in return (one could argue they are moving molecules from other parts of the same element not scene on screen, but that doesn´t change the fact that reshaping is indeed something worth an exchange). Also i never felt Alf and Edward develop in their alchemy, they sure as hell develop as persons, but not so much on the fighting mechanics. Some parts just felt like cheap retelling of real life events, particularly the whole Russia, Germany, the whole Midle East, China deal. It is really really good, just not god level good to me. I liked FMAB a lot as an anime, but i didn´t found it the glorious master piece everyone sold it to me. i found the manga "ok" the first time i read it, and i am an avid manga reader (at least two a month). I know this is an insanely late response, but i was just recently skimming through this kinda posts cause i was contemplating reading FMA again.
